The Northbound takeaway

Build segments around the decision people face, then examine who falls into each group.

The reference point

The Bank of Canada lowered its policy rate to 2.50% on 17 September 2025. That provides a clear reference date for research, but not a ready-made conclusion about how households felt or acted.

A more useful segmentation

A renter, a mortgage holder approaching renewal and a homeowner without a mortgage may face different immediate questions. These are possible research segments, not measured findings. Age and income can help describe each group, but they should not replace direct questions about financial circumstances.

Our interpretation

An effective study would first establish the decision horizon: renewing, moving, borrowing, saving or making no immediate change. It would then assess awareness and intended action. Cross-tabulations should disclose their sample sizes, especially when several characteristics are combined. Without those checks, a compelling segment story may rest on too few interviews. This is a retrospective research-design note, not a Northbound consumer poll.
