The Northbound takeaway

Keep personal financial confidence separate from broad economic confidence.

Looking back at the quarter

The Bank of Canada’s fourth-quarter 2025 consumer survey, released on 19 January 2026, described subdued sentiment and weaker spending plans. Its online interviews ran from 30 October to 18 November 2025. A retrospective reading should retain those field dates rather than implying the findings describe every day of the quarter.

A practical distinction

The national economy, the local job market and personal finances are connected, but they are not the same subject. A respondent may expect weak economic growth while feeling secure in their own work. Another may see positive headlines and still struggle with a debt payment.

Our interpretation

A useful confidence dashboard should preserve those separate views. For a consumer brand, personal purchasing capacity may be more relevant than a broad economic judgment. For an employer, perceived job options may be more useful. Neither relationship should be assumed: the research design needs to test it. Northbound’s contribution here is interpretation of a published Bank of Canada survey.
